Media Portrayals of Female Isolation

Media portrayals of female isolation is a term referring to the rare, usually accidental moments where mainstream media admits that girls who aren’t hot, thin, or socially lubricated exist, and are hated for it. These portrayals usually focus on awkward, fat, ugly, weird, loud, or just unsexualized girls navigating a world that either doesn’t notice them, or only notices them to humiliate them.

Examples

• PEN15 – Maya and Anna exist in the most painfully accurate rendering of middle school hell. Maya especially is considered the ugly, loud, ethnic friend. Boys mock her, girls ignore her.

• Insatiable – Patty Bladell is bullied, ignored, and harassed when she’s fat. The second she’s skinny, people act like she matters. But she doesn’t. Her trauma slowly eats her alive.
